Shopify social sharing image

On Shopify’s free themes, a product, collection, or blog post shares its featured image. The homepage and other pages share the image in Online Store preferences. A file in the theme can replace both.

The image in Online Store preferences

Shopify’s social media image article is the admin path:

  1. In the Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Preferences.
  2. In Social sharing image and SEO, click Add image, or Change image if one is already there.
  3. Choose the file and click Save.

That image is what Shopify uses when the page has no featured image. The article names the homepage and an About page as that case. The same section is also where the homepage title and meta description are edited.

With no social sharing image uploaded, Shopify can use an image already in the theme: Header → Logo first, then Theme settings → Checkout → Logo. If that logo is small or sits on a transparent background, Shopify fills the gap with Theme settings → Colors → Background, or the checkout main-content background when the first color is missing. A share that looks like a logo on a colored block is this fallback.

Products, collections, and blog posts

The same Shopify article says free themes show the featured image for three page types: product pages, collection pages, and blog posts. Set that image on the product, the collection, or the article. The preferences image is the one for pages that have no featured image.

Shopify’s page_image object is the same rule in Liquid. It is the featured image on product pages, collection pages, and blog posts. Everywhere else, and on those pages when the featured image is missing, it is the social sharing image. If the theme prints no og:image, Shopify adds og:image, og:image:secure_url, og:image:width, and og:image:height from page_image.

Theme files can outrank the preferences image

Shopify lists a second order in that same article, for when the theme itself supplies an image:

  1. An image hardcoded in the theme files.
  2. An image in theme settings, including social media, social sharing, or the checkout logo.
  3. The image in Online Store preferences.

Dawn prints the tags from page_image in snippets/meta-tags.liquid. A theme that already outputs og:image keeps Shopify from adding a second set. Some themes only share an image that was uploaded in theme settings. If preferences has a file and the card still shows something else, check Theme settings → Social media or Social sharing, and Theme settings → Checkout → Logo. Shopify says a blank preferences field can mean the share is already coming from one of those.

A relative image URL is a separate failure. The tag needs an absolute https:// address. See absolute OG image URL. Size and format are in OG image size and OG image format.

After you change the image

Shopify says Facebook stores images for a number of days, and points at the Sharing Debugger to refresh the saved page. The article also says an outdated image in search results needs a resubmitted sitemap. That is the search listing, separate from the link card in Slack, X, LinkedIn, Discord, or iMessage.

Run the form at the top after you save. If og:image is already the new file and an app still shows the old card, use clear Open Graph cache. CardScope reads the live page. It does not clear those apps. If the tag is missing entirely, walk og:image not showing.

FAQ

Where do I upload the store image?

Online Store → Preferences → Social sharing image and SEO. Add image, or Change image, then Save. Shopify’s help article is the source for those labels.

What does a product link use?

The product’s featured image, on free themes. Collections and blog posts work the same way. The homepage and an About page use the social sharing image, because those pages have no featured image. page_image follows that split.

Why is the card a logo?

With no social sharing image, Shopify can use the header logo or the checkout logo, and it pads a small or transparent logo with a background color. An image written into the theme files also comes ahead of the preferences upload.

What does a CardScope check cost?

Previews for X, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, iMessage, Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Microsoft Teams, plus the fix checklist, are Pro: $19 once via Stripe Checkout. No account. A sample report shows the shape of the result before you pay. A free check names whether og:image and og:title are set. We parse HTML in memory and discard it — we do not store the page.
