Guide
Squarespace social sharing image
Squarespace has a site-wide social sharing logo, and a separate image on each page, post, or product. The logo in the header is a third image. It only steps in for the homepage, and only after the other two are empty.
The image for the whole site
Squarespace’s social sharing images article calls this the social sharing logo. It represents the whole site. The steps there are:
- Open the Social Sharing panel.
- Click + to upload an image or choose one from the library, or drag the file into the uploader.
- Click Save.
The article names the panel and does not print a longer menu path. In the editor, the panel is the one titled Social Sharing. Squarespace says images shared on Facebook need to be at least 200×200, and that Facebook changes its preferred size often. If the card crops the picture, try another size. A 1200×630 PNG or JPEG is the usual size across apps, in OG image size. The Open Graph image resizer crops to that in the browser.
One page, post, or product
An Alternate Social Sharing Image is the image for that URL. Squarespace’s article, and the page settings reference, use the same Social tab. The page-settings article says that with no alternate image, the social sharing logo is what displays.
For a page: open the Pages panel, hover the title, open page settings, click Social, upload the image, and click Save. The alternate image is edited on a computer. Squarespace’s page-settings article says social settings, including this image, are not in the mobile app.
For a collection item, open the Pages panel and the blog, store, or calendar:
- Blog posts and events: hover the item and click Edit.
- Products: double-click the product.
- Portfolio sub-pages on version 7.1: click …, then Settings.
Then open Social, upload, and save. Squarespace says this alternate image is not available for gallery images or album tracks. A link to a gallery image uses the social sharing logo.
The header logo is a different image
The site logo is the picture in the header. Squarespace’s site logo article sets it from Edit site header (version 7.1) or Logo & Title (version 7.0), in Logo Image. Clicking it goes to the homepage. That upload does not replace the social sharing logo.
Squarespace’s guide to what shows in a social post lists the image a network is offered, first match wins.
A layout page, a collection page, or an index:
- Alternate Social Sharing Image
- Social sharing logo
- Site logo, for homepages
- The network’s own guess
A collection item, such as a blog post, product, or event:
- Alternate Social Sharing Image (blog posts, products, and events)
- The item’s featured image
- The first product image, on products
- Social sharing logo
- The network’s own guess
A cover page uses the alternate image, then the social sharing logo. With neither, Squarespace says no image is used. A homepage with an empty Social Sharing panel can fall through to the header logo. Other pages do not. Put the card image in Social Sharing, and put the header mark in Logo Image.
Ask the app to fetch again
Squarespace says the network decides what appears, and that the wrong title or image is usually an older copy the network already stored. Ask that app to fetch the URL again. The tools, and the apps that have none, are in clear Open Graph cache. CardScope reads the live page and does not clear those copies. If the check shows no og:image at all, continue with og:image not showing.
FAQ
Where do I set the image for every page?
The Social Sharing panel. Click +, add the image, and save. Squarespace calls that file the social sharing logo.
How do I override one URL?
Page settings, or the item editor, then the Social tab, then Alternate Social Sharing Image. Gallery images and album tracks do not have that field. A gallery image link uses the social sharing logo.
Why did the header logo show up in the card?
On a homepage, Squarespace offers the site logo after the alternate image and the social sharing logo are both empty. Set the social sharing logo if you want a wide image there. The header logo stays the header logo.
What does a CardScope check cost?
Previews for X, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, iMessage, Bluesky, Threads, Mastodon, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Microsoft Teams, plus the fix checklist, are Pro: $19 once via Stripe Checkout. No account. A sample report shows the shape of the result before you pay. A free check names whether og:image and og:title are set. We parse HTML in memory and discard it — we do not store the page.
